In A Piece of my Heart (Blessings, Georgia #4) by Sharon Sala, for Mercy Dane growing up in foster care was tough and she's only ever been able to rely on herself. But when she's asked to head to Blessings, Georgia to help save someone's life, she finds herself welcomed by most in the small town. Soon after the miracle of saving a life, Mercy finds her life changing in ways she never imagined. She always dreamed of being part of a family, and now she may finally have it. Can Lon Pittman, the small town police chief, convince Mercy to give him a chance at happy ever after?

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Sala, and it's a story I really enjoyed, despite the fact that it encompasses a heroine that went through a lot of hard times in her life growing up. Still, in saying that, this story was entertaining, fast-paced and I loved the way it started, even though Mercy has to deal with some unsavory characters in her job working at a bar. Luckily, the heroine has some really good friends who stand up for her. However, it was the moment that she came face-to-face with the hero again since they parted ways when he took care of her that really drew me into this story. How would he deal with her when she was doing something good for someone so loved in Blessings? Would he give her a chance to explain about the past?

The dialogue was well-written and although what the heroine has been through in the past would make any woman fearful to trust, I liked that Lon and those she begins to get close with help her to realize that there are people she can rely on that won't let her down. Indeed, Mercy is strong, brave, independent and I liked how she stands up to those that think she's too quick to speak her mind and needs to tone down her attitude. I also liked that she was willing to do whatever it takes to help those that need it, which is proven by what she does when a child finds herself in trouble. While Lon, he's confident, smart, a good police chief the way he deals with the situations presented to him from people that cause trouble and I liked how determined he was to prove to Mercy that she could trust him. Just like she did way back when they first met.

Overall, this was a really good book Ms. Sala has penned, which encompassed plenty of chemistry between the main characters and had secondary characters that entertained me just as much as the main ones did, especially since Mercy keeps butting heads -- so to speak -- with a man that isn't used to a woman being so independent, strong-willed and says whatever she wants without consequences. The way this story ended had me worried for the heroine, because of the situation she and the police chief are dealing with. Will she be all right? However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up wonderfully, because no one deserves happiness more than Mercy after all that she's been through. I would recommend A Piece of my Heart by Sharon Sala, if you enjoy second chance romances, small town romances, or books by authors Kat Martin, Roxanne St. Claire, Carla Neggers, or Lindsay McKenna.

She's never had a home

Growing up in a troubled foster home, Mercy Dane knew she could never rely on anyone but herself. She's used to giving her all to people who don't give her a second glance, so when she races to Blessings, Georgia, to save the life of an accident victim, she's flabbergasted when the grateful town opens its arms to her. She never dreamed she'd ever find family or friends--or a man who looks at her as if she hung the stars.

Until she finds peace in his arms

Police Chief Lon Pittman is getting restless living in sleepy little Blessings. But the day Mercy Dane roars into his life on the back of a motorcycle, practically daring him to pull her over, he's lost. There's something about Mercy's tough-yet-vulnerable spirit that calls to Lon, and he will do anything in his power to make her realize that home isn't just where the heart is--home is where their heart is.

  1. I haven't read anything by this author before. It sounds like I'll have to give this book a chance. I like small town romance with a bit of mystery mixed in.
